Mold behind wardrobe in Dubai: call management or specialist?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first or get a specialist company to test it?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation and assess the full extent. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue caused by condensation buildup between the furniture and the cooler wall surface, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a rental property in JVC, your first call should be to building management. They are typically responsible for the building's structure and envelope. Report it promptly, as delays can lead to further damage. They may send their maintenance team to assess, but their response is often limited to surface cleaning with bleach, which doesn't address the root cause or potential health risks.

Given the description of it spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Building management's solution is often superficial, while a specialist will use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness (like a potential seepage issue) and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially if it's a type like Aspergillus that can cause more significant irritation.

The most effective approach is to inform management to document the issue while simultaneously engaging a specialist for a proper diagnostic. This provides you with scientific evidence of the problem's severity, which you can then use to ensure the landlord or management company completes a permanent fix, not just a cosmetic cover-up.
