Mold behind wardrobe making kids cough: clean myself or call pros?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’ve just discovered black spots spreading behind the wardrobe in their bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah. I think it’s from the humidity, but I'm really worried about their health. Is it safe for me to clean this myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

With kids coughing and visible black mold growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The UAE's high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold behind furniture where condensation and poor air circulation occur. This is a serious health concern.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall, and the fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. It also fails to address the underlying moisture source. For a small patch on a non-porous surface, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be used with proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). However, the spread behind the wardrobe suggests a larger issue.

The primary risk with self-cleaning is missing the root cause—likely a hidden leak in the wall, rising damp, or excessive condensation. Without fixing the moisture source, the mold will return. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source. For health safety, especially with children, a certified company can perform the remediation with containment to prevent spores from spreading throughout the house during cleaning and verify the air quality is safe afterwards with post-remediation testing.
