Mold causing kids' coughs and safe removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the back wall, probably from all the humidity. Could this be the cause of their coughs, and what’s the safest way to get rid of it with little ones in the house?

Black mold exposure can absolutely cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies in children, who are more sensitive to airborne spores. The high humidity in Dubai villas, especially in enclosed spaces like behind wardrobes, creates a perfect environment for this growth.
For a patch larger than one square meter, Dubai Municipality guidelines strongly recommend professional remediation, especially with children present. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the air quality. The safest first step is to isolate the area—keep the room closed off and the AC switched off to prevent spores from circulating through the ducts. A certified inspector can identify the mold species through lab testing to confirm the health risk and pinpoint the moisture source, which must be fixed to prevent recurrence. Remediation involves sealing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores during removal, and disposing of contaminated materials like drywall safely. After removal, post-remediation verification testing is crucial to confirm the air quality is safe for your family. |
