Mold causing month-long cough, need doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom here in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of the wall where the AC unit drips. It’s been so humid lately that I think it’s made it worse. Should I be rushing my family to a doctor or is cleaning it ourselves enough to stop the symptoms?

Black mold in Dubai's climate is a serious health concern, especially with persistent symptoms like a month-long cough. The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth where condensation occurs, like behind units or on cold walls.

You should absolutely consult a doctor for your family's persistent cough and inform them about the mold exposure. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself. Disturbing it releases a high concentration of spores into the air, which can significantly worsen respiratory symptoms. For a growth of this size and with ongoing health issues, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the extent of the problem behind the wall and identify the mold species.

The initial step is to stop the moisture source. Have an HVAC technician check and correct the AC drip issue immediately. Dubai Municipality guidelines emphasize controlling moisture as the primary step in mold management. Until a professional can remediate it, keep the area ventilated and avoid using the room if possible.

Professional remediation is required to safely remove the mold, contain the spores, and apply antimicrobial treatments. A reputable company will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the air quality is safe, which is crucial when children are affected.
