Mold exposure causing coughs and headaches: doctor first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve just found patches of black, fuzzy mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a ground-floor villa in Jumeirah and it’s been so humid lately. I’m getting headaches myself and I’m terrified this is the cause. Should we see a doctor immediately or get the mold tested first?

For a situation like yours with persistent respiratory symptoms and visible mold, seeing a doctor should be your first step. Explain the mold exposure to them; they can assess your family's health and determine if the symptoms are likely related. This is crucial for children, as their developing respiratory systems are more susceptible to irritation from mold spores.

Concurrently, you should arrange for a professional mold inspection. The black patches behind the wardrobe indicate a persistent moisture issue, common in ground-floor villas in humid areas like Jumeirah due to capillary rise from the soil. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, condensation from an AC unit, or seepage through the wall—and assess the full extent of the growth, which is frequently larger than what is visible.

Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself, especially with children present. Disturbing it releases a high concentration of spores into the air, which can worsen symptoms. A remediation specialist will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove the contaminated materials.

For verification, insist on before-and-after testing. Air quality tests show spore counts in the breathing zone, while surface swabs can identify the species. This lab data, which we provide from our own microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm the environment is safe again after remediation and to rule out hidden growth in your AC system, a common amplifier in Dubai's climate. The combination of medical advice and scientific environmental data is the most effective path to resolving this.
