Mold exposure risks for toddlers: doctor visit needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out their toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from the humidity. What are the immediate health risks for a 3 and 5 year old from this kind of exposure, and should I take them to a doctor right away?

Black mold exposure can cause significant respiratory irritation in young children, particularly those with existing allergies or asthma. The immediate risks for your 3 and 5 year old include persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and skin or eye irritation. Their symptoms are a direct response to inhaling the mold spores.

Given their age and the duration of symptoms, a doctor's visit is advisable. A pediatrician can assess their condition, rule out other causes, and may recommend treatments to manage their allergic reactions. Be sure to inform the doctor about the mold discovery.

In Dubai's humid climate, this situation is common. Condensation builds up on cooler exterior walls, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow like a toy chest. The first step is to move the chest and thoroughly clean the wall with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, wearing a mask and gloves. Increase ventilation in the room immediately.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is wise to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity that is feeding the mold. They can perform air quality testing to identify the spore count and species, which helps determine the full scope of the issue. Remediation should focus on fixing the moisture source first, then removing the contaminated materials.
