Mold exposure: see a doctor or just remove it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I keep waking up with a stuffy nose. I finally pulled our bedroom wardrobe away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We live in a Jumeirah villa and I'm panicking about what this has been doing to our health. Should we see a doctor immediately for the symptoms, or will getting rid of the mold be enough?

Yes, see a doctor first, then arrange for professional mold removal. The persistent coughing and congestion you describe are classic signs of prolonged mold exposure, especially in children. A doctor can assess your family's symptoms, rule out other causes, and provide appropriate treatment to alleviate the respiratory issues.

For the mold itself, do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, especially given the climate in Dubai. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to regrow and spread if not properly remediated. A professional inspection is crucial to identify the full extent of the moisture source—like that AC leak—and the spread of mold, often inside wall cavities. They will use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from dispersing throughout your villa during removal.

After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent microbiology lab is the only way to verify the air quality is safe. This is a standard practice for science-driven remediation companies in the UAE. Addressing the health symptoms and the environmental cause simultaneously is the most effective path forward.
