Mold found in bedroom; doctor first or inspection?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past few weeks, especially after they've been playing in their bedroom. I finally pulled their bunk bed away from the wall and found a patch of black spots behind it, near the AC vent. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm really worried about their health. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I get them checked by a doctor first?

Take your children to a doctor first. Their persistent cough is the primary health concern, and a medical professional can assess them and determine if the symptoms are allergy-related or something more serious. This also creates a documented health record, which can be important later.

For the inspection, do not attempt to test the mold yourself. Disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air your family breathes. In Dubai's humid climate, especially in older buildings where AC units can create condensation issues, what you see is often just the surface growth; the main colony can be hidden inside the wall or the AC duct itself.

A proper inspection here involves more than a visual check. A reputable professional will use a borescope to look inside wall cavities and your AC system and should take air and surface samples for lab analysis. This identifies the species, which determines the actual risk level, and is essential for planning an effective remediation. Look for a provider that can show you documented, lab-verified results from their inspections.
