Mold found in bedroom, immediate health risks and first step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom where it meets the wall and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. What are the immediate health risks and what’s the absolute first step I should take to deal with this safely?

Black mold exposure can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, and throat irritation, particularly in children whose respiratory systems are still developing. The constant AC use in Dubai creates a cycle of humidity and condensation that allows hidden mold from a leak to thrive.
Your absolute first step is to isolate the area. Close the bedroom door and do not use that AC unit. Do not attempt to clean or disturb the mold yourself, as this will release a massive amount of spores into your home's air. For a patch larger than a square meter, professional remediation is necessary to safely contain and remove the contaminated materials like the carpet and underlying padding. The health symptoms you describe are a significant indicator that this has been affecting your indoor air quality for some time. A certified mold inspection can identify the species and the full extent of the problem, including inside the AC system and walls, which is critical for a permanent solution. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow DM guidelines for containment and disposal to prevent cross-contamination. |
