Mold from AC in Dubai apartment: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and I just noticed a few small black spots on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for two years and it's never been an issue until now after the humid weather last week. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

The damp smell and black spots suggest mold growth, which is common here after humid periods when condensation forms in AC units and on cooler walls. For small, surface-level spots (under 1 square foot), you can clean with a vinegar solution or diluted bleach, but this only addresses visible growth and may not solve the underlying moisture source.

Given the location behind furniture and the AC-related smell, the visible spots are likely just the tip of the issue. Mold often grows inside wall cavities or AC ductwork where moisture accumulates. DIY cleaning won't reach these areas or identify the type of mold, which matters for health risks and remediation approach.

In Dubai apartments, the root cause is often a clogged AC drain line, poor insulation causing condensation, or a leak from another unit. A professional inspection identifies the moisture source and maps the full extent, often using moisture meters and borescopes. They can also take samples for lab analysis to determine if it's common Cladosporium or something more concerning like Stachybotrys.

For a thorough resolution—especially with AC involvement and hidden wall growth—a professional assessment is recommended. Look for a provider that offers detailed moisture mapping and can provide documented lab results, not just a visual inspection. This is the only way to ensure the problem is fully resolved and doesn't return during the next humid spell.
