Mold from AC leak in closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking for a while, and I just pulled out my winter clothes to find a huge patch of black and green mold all over the back wall and some of my jackets. It’s been super humid lately in Dubai and I guess the condensation made it worse. What’s the best way to tackle this myself, or should I just call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Based on the description of a "huge patch" of black and green mold covering a wall and your belongings, my professional recommendation is to call a certified remediation company immediately. This is not a typical DIY situation.

The persistent leak from the AC unit has created a significant and sustained moisture event, allowing the mold to establish a deep foothold not just on the surface, but likely within the wall cavity and possibly the HVAC system itself. The combination of cellulose (drywall), organic material (dust, cotton jackets), and constant humidity from Dubai's climate creates an ideal breeding ground. Disturbing this colony without proper containment, such as by wiping or scrubbing, will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, contaminating other areas of your bedroom and posing a health risk through inhalation.

In the UAE, proper remediation requires adherence to strict protocols for containment, air filtration (using HEPA scrubbers), and the safe disposal of contaminated porous materials like drywall and insulation. Furthermore, the root cause—the AC leak—must be identified and repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence. Attempting a partial cleanup will only provide a temporary solution.

For a case of this severity, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. I strongly advise you to contact a certified specialist like Saniservice. Their teams are equipped with the technology and expertise to handle such situations safely and in compliance with local standards, including a post-remediation verification test to ensure the space is truly mold-free. You can reach them for a consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
