Mold in AC vent: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a faint damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I just noticed a few small black spots around the vent in the master bedroom. I’m worried it might be mold, especially with the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

The damp smell and black spots around your AC vent in JVC are classic signs of microbial growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC operation. This is likely mold or bacteria thriving in the condensation that builds up inside your unit's ductwork.

For a few small, visible spots, you can attempt a careful DIY clean. Turn off the AC completely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the accessible vent area with a microfiber cloth dampened with a mixture of warm water and a small amount of detergent or white vinegar. Do not use bleach, as it can corrode metal components, release harmful fumes, and only lightens the color of mold without killing the root structure.

However, the smell indicates the growth is likely inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot see or safely reach. A surface clean won't resolve the problem. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and air quality tests to identify the species and concentration of spores, which is critical for assessing health risk, especially for allergy sufferers. Proper remediation requires specialized equipment to contain the area and prevent spores from spreading throughout your apartment during cleaning.

For a definitive answer on what you're dealing with and the correct solution, a professional assessment is the most effective path.
