Mold in bathroom causing cough: professional or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in our bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots spreading across the ceiling and the grout in the shower. It’s in our master bathroom in a Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I try cleaning it myself this weekend?

Persistent coughs in children linked to visible bathroom mould should be taken seriously, especially in Dubai's humid climate where mould can proliferate quickly. The black spots on the ceiling and grout are likely a sign of consistent moisture from showers and condensation, exacerbated by year-round AC use that creates temperature differentials.

For a small, surface-level patch that has just appeared, a DIY approach with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution can be effective. However, given that it's spreading and you've noticed it for some time, the mould may have penetrated porous surfaces like drywall or grout. DIY cleaning often removes the visible stain but leaves the root structure intact, allowing it to return quickly and continue releasing spores into the air.

In this case, with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is advisable. They can assess whether the mould is only superficial or has deeper growth, identify the species (as some types are more allergenic than others), and check for hidden moisture in walls or ceilings from potential AC condensate drain leaks—a common issue here. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a culture-based identification, which is the only way to know the specific type and potential health risk.

For immediate action, increase bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wiping down wet surfaces. This can help reduce further spread while you arrange for an assessment.
