Mold in bedroom causing cough: doctor or treatment first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold in their bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles appearing in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I'm really worried about their health, especially my youngest who has asthma. What's the best way to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, and should I be taking them to a doctor first?

Take your children to a doctor first and mention the mold exposure. This is critical for your asthmatic child, as medical documentation establishes a baseline and can guide treatment. A physician can determine if the cough is allergy-related or something more serious and provide immediate relief.

Concurrently, arrange for a professional mold inspection. The black speckles worsening with humidity are a classic sign of an active moisture problem, likely from condensation where the cold wall meets the ceiling or a minor leak. In Dubai's climate, this is very common. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into the room, potentially worsening their symptoms.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source and the mold type. Look for a provider that uses a moisture meter and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can take air or surface samples for lab analysis. This evidence is what separates a real remediation plan from a superficial cleaning. The remediation process itself should include containment of the area, HEPA filtration, removal of contaminated materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence. Keep the children out of the room until the process is complete.
