Mold in bedroom closet: DIY clean or hire Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the inside wall has been smelling really damp, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find black spots all over the back wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably from the high humidity. I'm worried about the health effects and if it's spread behind the drywall. Should I just clean it myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional mold removal company in Dubai, and what kind of cost am I looking at?

Visible mold on a wall in a damp closet is a common issue here due to our high humidity. Since you've noticed a smell and the mold has appeared on an interior wall, there's a significant chance it has spread behind the drywall, which you cannot address yourself.

Cleaning the surface with bleach is not recommended. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually feed the root structure, causing it to return worse. It also poses its own respiratory hazards in an enclosed space. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be more effective.

However, given the duration and the location on an interior wall, this likely requires professional assessment. The core issue is identifying and correcting the moisture source, which could be condensation from an AC line, a small plumbing leak, or humidity buildup from poor ventilation. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall cavity.

Remediation cost depends entirely on the extent of the contamination. Containing the area, removing affected drywall and insulation, treating the cavity, and properly disposing of materials are necessary steps for a lasting solution. You should request a detailed assessment from a company that provides documented lab results to verify the mold species and confirm cleanup was successful, as this is the only way to be certain the health risk is resolved.
