Mold in closet causing toddler cough in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been having a persistent cough and my bedroom's walk-in closet, especially on the back wall, has started to feel damp and has these black speckles. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. Is this definitely mold and who should I call to get it properly tested and removed in Dubai?

The black speckles in your humid closet are very likely mold, especially given Dubai's recent high humidity. This environment promotes mold growth on organic materials like wood, drywall, and even dust. A persistent toddler cough is a common reaction to mold spores, as children's respiratory systems are more sensitive.

For a confirmed diagnosis, a professional inspection is advised. In Dubai, look for a company with a certified mold inspector who can conduct air and surface sampling. The samples should be analyzed by an independent microbiology lab to identify the species and concentration, which determines the health risk and correct remediation method. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality that reputable companies follow.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself, as improper agitation will release more spores into your home's air. For a small area, a mixture of white vinegar and water can sometimes be effective for surface cleaning, but the underlying moisture issue must be fixed first. Since the dampness is on a wall, the source could be condensation from an AC duct running inside the wall, a plumbing leak, or simply trapped humid air. A pro will use a moisture meter to find the source.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the closet is well-ventilated. A small dehumidifier or moisture absorber can help significantly in enclosed spaces. Keeping the AC running consistently helps control overall indoor humidity levels, which is a constant battle in the UAE climate. Resolving the moisture is the only permanent solution.
