Mold in closet: DIY bleach or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black, speckled patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it’s from the AC unit on the other side of that wall. My husband thinks we can just wipe it off with bleach, but I’m worried it’s a bigger issue. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves, or do we need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Based on the description of black, speckled patches spreading in a closet adjacent to an AC unit, this is a classic indicator of a moisture issue, likely exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC operation. The condensation from the AC unit's cold surface interacting with the warm, humid air is a prime cause for mold growth on that wall.

While your husband's suggestion to use bleach is common, it is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration without addressing the root colony. More critically, it can exacerbate the problem by introducing additional moisture. The underlying cause is the persistent dampness, which must be identified and rectified.

For a situation involving visible spreading, a suspected HVAC link, and potential hidden growth within the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised. In the UAE, proper remediation follows strict guidelines, such as the Abu Dhabi EHSMS Code of Practice and DM's Trakhees standards for certain buildings, which require certified assessors and specific containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination.

Attempting a DIY clean could inadvertently release a large number of spores, contaminating other areas of your home. A certified professional from a company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the problem and the exact moisture source. The remediation process involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment, not just surface cleaning.
