Mold in closet: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles in the corners, and I just pulled out a winter jacket that had a fuzzy white patch on it. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humidity. Is this something I can clean with a vinegar solution from Lulu, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

Based on your description, this is highly likely a mold issue, and the recent humidity spike in Dubai is a classic catalyst. The black speckles in the corners are a telltale sign of mold growth, and the fuzzy white patch on your jacket is a confirmed active colony. This indicates elevated moisture levels within that closet, likely due to a combination of the external wall temperature differential (creating condensation) and inadequate ventilation.

While a vinegar solution from a supermarket can remove superficial, visible mold on a non-porous surface, it is a temporary and incomplete solution for your situation. It does not address the root cause—the hidden moisture source—nor does it kill the microscopic hyphae (roots) embedded within the drywall or plaster. In the UAE's climate, where air conditioning runs year-round, these conditions can quickly recur and worsen, potentially leading to structural damage and health concerns.

Given the location on an external wall, this could be a sign of a more significant problem, such as a minor insulation breach, a plumbing leak from an adjacent pipe, or compromised waterproofing. A DIY approach risks incomplete remediation and allows the problem to proliferate unseen.

For a definitive diagnosis and lasting solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source invisible to the naked eye. We then provide a detailed remediation plan compliant with Dubai Municipality standards.
