Mold in closet: DIY vinegar clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, the one on the inside wall, has started to get these small black speckles on the back wall and a few of our leather bags have a white fuzzy coating. It's been like this since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray myself, or is this a sign I need to call a professional mold remediation company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of high-humidity induced mold growth, very common in Dubai's climate. The black speckles on the wall are likely mold colonies, and the white fuzz on your leather goods is almost certainly a different type of mold feeding on the organic material.

While a DIY approach with vinegar can kill surface mold on non-porous materials, it is insufficient here for a few technical reasons. First, vinegar only addresses the surface you can see. Mold has hyphae (root-like structures) that penetrate deep into porous materials like drywall and leather. Surface cleaning will not eradicate this underlying growth, leading to rapid regrowth. Second, improper cleaning can aerosolize mold spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home. Leather requires specialized cleaning agents to avoid damage.

The presence on multiple material types (wall, personal items) indicates a persistent humidity issue. The closet on an interior wall suggests poor air circulation is creating a microclimate with a high relative humidity, perfect for mold proliferation.

For a situation like this, especially with valuable items involved, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the extent of the colonization. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to properly resolve the issue and prevent recurrence, following UAE standards for indoor environmental quality.

I recommend you call for a professional assessment. Please call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 to schedule an inspection with one of our certified specialists.
