Mold in closet: DIY vinegar or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, the one on the inside wall, has started to smell really damp and I just found a few small black spots on a couple of leather handbags I stored in there. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for five years and never had an issue until this past humid season. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to make sure it’s not spreading behind the walls?

A damp smell and visible spots in an interior closet during Dubai's humid season strongly suggest a hidden moisture source, likely condensation from a cold wall interacting with warm, humid air. Vinegar can remove surface mould you can see, but it won't address the root cause or mould growing unseen inside the wall cavity.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the priority is identifying the moisture source. This could be a small plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom, condensation on a cold bridge in the wall, or even a breach in the external vapour barrier letting ground moisture in. Since the issue is new after five years, a professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of dampness without destructive probing.

Attempting a DIY fix risks the mould returning quickly and spreading behind the drywall, leading to a much larger remediation project. A certified inspector can determine if the wall needs to be opened for drying and remediation. They will also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species, which is critical for assessing any potential health risks, especially in a bedroom.

Given Dubai's high humidity and reliance on AC, this is a common issue. A proper inspection provides a definitive diagnosis and a clear plan to resolve it permanently, protecting your health and your property's structure.
