Mold in closet near toddler's room: urgent or DIY cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I'm worried because my toddler sleeps in the adjoining room and has had a bit of a runny nose lately. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or is it okay to try cleaning it myself with vinegar this weekend?

The black spots in your closet are likely mold, common in Dubai's humid climate where condensation can form in cooler, less ventilated areas like closets. Since it's a small, contained area, DIY cleaning is often appropriate.

For a surface mold on non-porous materials, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then wipe it dry. Crucially, identify and address the moisture source. In a closet, it's often lack of air circulation. Leaving the door ajar or using a small desiccating agent can help.

However, with a toddler in an adjoining room, a professional inspection is strongly advised for two reasons. First, what you see might be a small part of a larger problem within the wall if the corner is an external wall experiencing condensation. Second, a lab analysis can identify the mold species, which determines the actual risk level beyond simple irritation. This is the only way to get a definitive answer on potential health implications for your child.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality, and a certified inspector can assess against those standards. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness you can't see, which is essential for a permanent fix, not just a surface clean.
