Mold in closet: urgent inspection needed before vacation?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has felt really damp for the last month, even with the AC on constantly. I just pulled our leather shoes out of the built-in closet and found white, fuzzy spots all over them, and the back wall of the closet feels cold and slightly wet to the touch. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get a professional mold inspection for immediately, or can it wait a couple of weeks until we get back from vacation?

Yes, you need a professional mold inspection before leaving on vacation. The cold, wet wall and visible mold growth on organic materials like leather indicate an active moisture issue that will continue to worsen.
In Dubai's climate, constant AC use can create significant condensation if there's a leak in the insulated ductwork running through that wall or a breach in the building envelope. The moisture accumulates in enclosed spaces like closets, creating an ideal environment for mold. Leaving this unattended for weeks allows the colony to expand significantly, potentially causing more extensive damage to your belongings and the property structure. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—whether it's a leaking AC drain line, condensation from cold bridging, or another issue. They will also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the mold species, as some types common in humid climates can cause more significant health effects and material damage. This evidence-based approach is critical; without knowing the source or the type, any cleaning is temporary. While you wait for the inspection, move all valuables out of the closet and increase air circulation in the room by leaving the closet doors open and using a fan, if possible. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate spores without addressing the root cause. The priority is diagnosing and stopping the moisture intrusion. |
