Mold in Dubai AC closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit into the carpeted bedroom closet. I thought I dried it out, but I just pulled out some winter clothes and found a patch of black and green mold on the back wall and a few of my shoes. I’m really worried it’s spreading behind there. What’s the most effective way to handle mold removal in Dubai’s humidity, and should I call a professional company or is this a DIY job?

Mold from an AC leak in a JVC apartment is a common issue due to our high humidity, which allows it to spread into porous materials like drywall and carpet backing. For a patch larger than one square meter or if you suspect hidden growth, DIY is not advised. The risk of incomplete removal and aerosolizing spores is high.

Effective remediation starts with fixing the AC leak to eliminate the moisture source. The affected drywall and carpet padding are likely compromised and need removal. Surface cleaning alone is insufficient. A professional inspection with a moisture meter is crucial to assess the extent behind the wall. In Dubai's climate, improper drying can lead to rapid regrowth.

For verifiable results, hire a company that follows IICRC standards and provides before/after lab testing to confirm the mold species and its removal. This science-driven approach is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved, especially in a bedroom where you spend significant time.
