Mold in Dubai closet: call management or remove myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to deal with mold removal here in Dubai, and should I call the building management first or just handle it myself?

That black spot pattern spreading in your closet is a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The AC creates a cold surface on that interior wall or corner, and humid air condenses on it, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive behind your clothes.

For a contained area like a closet, you can handle initial removal yourself if you are not sensitive to mold. Start by moving all clothing and items out. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted detergent (avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and not the fungal structure). Wipe the area thoroughly, dry it completely with a fan, and address the moisture source.

However, you must identify and stop the moisture source for this to be a permanent fix. The cause is often a combination of poor wall insulation creating a cold spot and inadequate ventilation in that enclosed space. After cleaning, use a moisture meter to check that the wall is truly dry. Improving air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar or using a small desiccant dehumidifier can help prevent recurrence.

You should also inform your building management. Under Dubai regulations, the building owner is typically responsible for the structural integrity of the property, including external walls and insulation. They need to investigate if there is a hidden leak in the wall or if inadequate insulation is the core issue. Your report creates a paper trail for them to address the root cause.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or covers more than one square meter, the problem is likely beyond surface condensation. At that point, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall cavity and identify the species, as some types common in the UAE can cause significant irritation and require more targeted remediation.
