Mold in Dubai closet: clean bags and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s walk-in closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started smelling really damp, and I just found a few small black spots in the corner on my leather bags. It's the interior wall, and I run the AC constantly, so I'm confused why this is happening. What's the best way to clean this off my bags and who should I call to properly check the wall for a possible leak so it doesn't ruin everything else in there?

That damp smell and black spots in your closet are classic signs of a hidden moisture issue, common in Dubai's climate. Even with constant AC, cold interior walls can still create condensation, especially in poorly ventilated closets, which provides the perfect damp environment for mold growth.

For your leather bags, first move them to a dry, well-ventilated area. Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar or a leather-safe cleaner to gently wipe the spots. Allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight, then condition the leather to prevent cracking. Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals.

The priority is diagnosing the wall's moisture source. This could be a small internal pipe leak or, more likely, interstitial condensation. You should call a professional mold inspector with a thermal imaging camera to identify the exact moisture source and extent without destructive probing. In Dubai, look for a DM-approved or DC-Pro registered contractor. They can perform a non-invasive assessment and, if needed, take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type.

Addressing the root cause is essential; simply wiping the visible spot will not stop it from returning. A proper inspection will determine if a minor repair, improved ventilation, or a dehumidification strategy is needed to protect the rest of your belongings.
