Mold in Dubai closet: DIY or professional removal needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has a bunch of black spots on the back wall that seem to be spreading. It started after that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago, and our clothes are starting to smell damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional mold removal company in Dubai, and what would that kind of service usually cost?

That spreading black spot is likely active mold growth, exacerbated by Dubai's recent high humidity. Closet walls, especially exterior ones, are prone to condensation when humid outdoor air meets the cooler, air-conditioned interior surface.
Using a supermarket bleach spray is not recommended. It can appear to remove the visible stain but often fails to kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces like drywall or plaster. It can also release harmful spores and leave behind moisture, allowing regrowth within weeks. For a small, isolated patch (under 1 sq. ft), a careful DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub gently, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. However, since it's spreading and affecting your clothes, the source moisture is likely still present, making professional assessment wise. In many Dubai villas, this indicates a larger humidity control issue. A professional inspection identifies the exact species and moisture source—whether it's a hidden leak, thermal bridging, or insufficient AC ventilation in that room. Companies with their own microbiology lab can provide a precise diagnosis, which is crucial for effective remediation and preventing recurrence. The cost for professional remediation varies significantly based on the extent of contamination and required repairs, but an initial inspection and testing should provide a clear scope and quote. |
