Mold in Dubai villa causing cough: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I'm starting to worry because we've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Given the symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The combination of persistent coughing in children and visible mold growth on an exterior wall in a humid climate like Dubai points to a potential systemic issue that bleach cannot address.

Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it does not kill mold roots inside porous building materials like drywall or concrete, and it can actually release more spores into the air. The root cause is likely trapped moisture within the wall cavity, possibly from condensation on cold AC lines or a minor leak, which will cause the mold to return without proper remediation.

In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, condensation is a very common hidden problem. A proper inspection involves using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of dampness inside the wall, which is impossible to do yourself. They will also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus can be more problematic for respiratory health.

For a situation involving health symptoms and structural mold, a DIY approach is not advisable. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely without cross-contaminating your home. A reputable inspector will provide a full report with lab results and a scope of work, which you can then use to get accurate remediation quotes.
