Mold in Dubai villa causing coughs: DIY or professional??« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah villa. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it just comes back darker after a few days.
Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Recurring bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity, especially after a DIY cleaning attempt, indicates a deeper moisture issue. The visible growth is likely just the surface part of a larger colony, possibly within the wall or behind the tiles. For persistent mold linked to health symptoms like coughing in children, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.
Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure of the mold and can actually feed it by adding moisture. The key is to identify and rectify the source of the persistent dampness, which is often poor ventilation, a hidden plumbing leak, or condensation from cold water pipes in the wall. In a Jumeirah villa, the high humidity accelerates this. For a temporary measure, use a dedicated mold remover (not bleach) and scrub with a stiff brush. Then, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure the AC is functioning properly to dehumidify the air. However, if the mold returns quickly or covers an area larger than a square meter, or if health concerns persist, DIY is not sufficient. Professional remediation is advised here because they will use moisture meters to find the hidden source, contain the area to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning, and use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to properly remove the biofilm. They can also provide post-remediation verification to ensure the problem is resolved. Given the health symptoms, this is the most prudent course of action. |
