Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black and green mold spreading on the back wall of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather got more humid. I’m worried about our health and damaging the walls. Should I just clean it myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional, and what would the likely cost be for a room this size?

Based on the description of a large, spreading patch of black and green mold in your Jumeirah villa, this is unequivocally a situation that requires professional assessment and remediation. Attempting a DIY clean with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root colony intact. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and significantly increasing the health risk and the eventual remediation cost.

The climate in Dubai is a primary catalyst for such issues. The combination of high humidity and year-round air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation within wall cavities—especially in closets and behind furniture where air circulation is poor. This trapped moisture provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive unseen.

A professional inspection is critical. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion and the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible. Remediation involves containing the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure (HEPA filtration units) to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials (e.g., drywall, insulation), and a comprehensive hygienization process using EPA-approved, specialized biocides to eliminate all microbial growth.

For a master bedroom closet, the cost for a complete professional remediation typically ranges from AED 2,500 to AED 5,500, depending on the severity and the extent of the moisture damage behind the walls. This investment ensures the problem is solved at its root, safeguarding your family's health and your property's integrity.
