Mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional cost?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe on an exterior wall. It’s been especially humid lately and the musty smell is really strong in that room. I'm worried about it spreading but have no idea what this kind of job should cost here. Is this a DIY fix with bleach, or should I definitely call a professional mold removal company, and what’s a reasonable price range for a small area like this?

A small patch of black mold on an exterior wall in a Jumeirah villa is a common issue, often triggered by Dubai's high humidity and the temperature differential between the cool interior and the hot, moist exterior, which causes condensation. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and can worsen the problem by adding moisture without killing the root structure.

For a patch under one square meter, a careful DIY approach can work if the cause is addressed. You must fix the condensation source, then clean with a dedicated mold remover, wear an N95 mask, and ensure the area is completely dried. However, the strong musty smell suggests a deeper issue, potentially within the wall cavity, that a surface clean won't resolve.

Given the smell and location on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source, which is critical for a permanent fix. The cost for a small, contained area like a wardrobe is typically a few hundred to just over a thousand Dirhams, but prices vary significantly based on the extent of hidden damage and the remediation method required. The investment is in the diagnosis and guarantee that the underlying problem is solved. Always request a detailed assessment and a post-remediation verification to confirm the mold and moisture issue is fully resolved.
