Mold in Dubai villa: DIY treatment or professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month, and my wife has started having allergy symptoms. Is this something we can treat ourselves with bleach from ACE Hardware, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what’s the typical cost for a room this size?

Black mold in Dubai villas is a common issue due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The location behind your headboard is a classic sign of condensation buildup from the cold wall meeting warm, humid room air. Given the spread and the onset of allergy symptoms, a DIY bleach treatment is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or penetrate porous materials like drywall.

For a patch that is actively spreading, professional assessment is strongly advised. The remediation cost for a single room varies significantly based on the extent of hidden damage within the wall cavity, which is common in such cases. You can expect a reputable company to first conduct a moisture mapping inspection to determine the full scope before providing a detailed quote.

The initial step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Move the headboard away from the wall immediately to improve air circulation. For a temporary measure before professional help, you can gently scrub the surface with a vinegar solution and ensure the room is well-ventilated, but this is not a permanent fix. Given the health symptoms and potential for structural damage, a professional inspection is the most reliable course of action to ensure it is handled safely and completely.
