Mold in Dubai villa: professional cost and DIY possible?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the ensuite bathroom. It's gotten bigger over the last few weeks since the weather got more humid. I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls and affecting our AC. What's the realistic cost for a proper mold inspection and remediation here, and is it something I should absolutely hire a professional for, or can I handle it myself?

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, that black patch is likely the visible tip of a larger problem. Condensation within walls and AC ducts is common here, and the growth you see often indicates a more extensive colony hidden from view.

For a situation like yours—spreading growth in a structural wall cavity—professional assessment is strongly advised. A proper inspection involves moisture mapping with thermal imaging and borescope cameras to see inside the wall, plus air and surface sampling to identify the species. This is critical, as some molds common in villas here can be more than just an irritant. Remediation then requires containment, HEPA filtration, and removal of affected materials to prevent spores from spreading to other areas, including your AC system.

DIY attempts often disturb the colony, aerosolizing spores and contaminating the entire home. You can clean small, surface-level mildew on non-porous tiles with a vinegar solution, but porous materials like drywall and insulation must be removed. The cost for professional services varies significantly based on the infestation's square footage and accessibility. You can expect to request assessments from several certified providers; look for those offering detailed lab reports and post-remediation verification to ensure the job is done to international standards.
