Mold in Jumeirah apartment closet: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It seems to be spreading from the wall, which is an exterior wall, and the area feels slightly damp. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call the building management first?

That damp, black mold in your closet is a classic symptom of condensation on an exterior wall, a frequent issue in Dubai's climate. The constant high humidity outside meets the cold air from your AC, causing moisture to form inside walls, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For a small patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear a mask and gloves. However, since the wall feels damp and it's spreading from within, this is likely more than a surface issue. Simply wiping the visible mold will not address the moisture source, and it will return.

You should call building management. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues like water intrusion through exterior walls typically falls on the building owner or management. They need to inspect the wall from the outside for cracks or leaks in the building envelope and address the root cause, which may require professional remediation to prevent further spread into the wall cavity.

While you wait for them, move your stored items away from the area to prevent cross-contamination and improve air circulation. A dehumidifier in the room can help manage ambient moisture levels. If the area is large or you suspect it has spread behind the wall, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly thermal imaging is warranted to assess the full extent.
