Mold in Jumeirah apartment: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little, and now we’ve discovered a patch of black mold on the back of the bedroom closet. It’s been there for a few weeks and seems to be spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or should I just call a professional mold removal company, and what’s the typical cost for a small room here in Dubai?

Given the leak and visible spreading, this requires professional remediation. The UAE's high humidity, especially in summer, turns small leaks into major mold problems quickly. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the roots and its high water content can actually feed the mold deeper in the drywall.

For a small, contained patch, remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like that section of drywall, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores. The critical step is fixing the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning. Companies with their own microbiology lab can test to confirm the species and verify the cleanup was successful, which is the only way to be sure it's resolved.
