Mold in Jumeirah apartment: professional remediation or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing a musty smell into the living room, and I just found some black spots behind our large sofa that’s against the wall. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried it’s spreading but have no idea what it costs to get a proper mold inspection and remediation here—is this a job for a professional company or can I handle it myself with something from ACE?

A musty smell from the AC and visible black spots on the wall are strong indicators of an active mold issue, and Dubai's high humidity significantly accelerates its growth. This is a common problem in JVC apartments where condensation from AC units can dampen walls behind furniture.

For the black spots on the wall, if the area is small (less than one square meter) and confined to the surface, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause.

The musty AC smell is the more critical concern. It means the system itself is contaminated and is actively spreading mold spores throughout your apartment every time it runs. DIY solutions like coil sprays from ACE are superficial; they cannot reach deep into the ductwork or drain pan to eradicate the source.

Professional remediation is strongly recommended here. The process involves identifying and correcting the moisture source (often a clogged condensate drain or poor insulation), then using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments on the entire system. In the UAE, reputable companies should provide before-and-after testing from an independent lab to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. Given the combination of visible growth and a contaminated AC, requesting an inspection and assessment is the most effective course of action.
