Mold in kids' room: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it’s from a mold issue in their bedroom. I noticed a small patch of black spots behind their wardrobe a few weeks ago, but after this last humid spell, it seems to have spread a little. I’m worried but not sure if this is something I can clean myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper inspection.

Visible mold growth behind furniture, especially in a child's bedroom, warrants a professional inspection in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive, often in hidden areas like inside walls or under flooring that a DIY approach will miss.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), a thorough DIY cleaning with a vinegar solution or dedicated mold cleaner can be effective. However, bleach is not recommended as it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold roots. Crucially, you must identify and fix the source of moisture, which is often condensation from an AC unit, a small leak, or poor ventilation.

Given that the mold has spread and you have health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is important as some types, like Aspergillus, are more commonly associated with respiratory issues and are frequently identified in regional indoor air quality surveys. The health of children and those with allergies can be particularly sensitive to even low levels of mold spores. A proper inspection will map the full extent of the problem and provide a targeted remediation plan, not just a surface clean.
