Mold in seaside closet: clean myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a bunch of black fuzzy spots, and I’m freaking out. I first noticed a weird damp smell a couple of weeks ago, but after I pulled out my winter clothes today, I saw the mold all over the back wall and even on some of my shoes. I live in an older building in Jumeirah, and this is the wall facing the sea. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I immediately call my building management to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that warrants immediate and professional attention. The presence of a persistent damp smell followed by visible, widespread black fuzzy growth on an exterior wall in a seaside Jumeirah building is a significant red flag.

The UAE's high humidity, combined with sea-facing exposure to salt-laden air, creates a perfect storm for mold. Older buildings can have compromised waterproofing or insulation, leading to condensation within the walls themselves. This is not just surface moisture; the wall cavity is likely affected. Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach or store-bought solutions is highly inadvisable. These methods only address surface discoloration and will not eliminate the hidden moisture source or the root colony. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your bedroom and posing potential health risks.

According to Dubai Municipality regulations, building management is responsible for the structural integrity of the property, which includes addressing moisture ingress from external walls. You should immediately report this to them. However, their responsibility typically ends at repairing the leak. The actual mold remediation—the safe removal, disposal, and sanitization of affected materials—is the unit owner's or tenant's responsibility and must be handled by certified professionals.

We strongly recommend you do not disturb the area and seek a professional inspection. At Saniservice, our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the exact moisture source and extent of contamination, providing a clear remediation plan. For a case like this, professional containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment are essential.
