Mold in shower grout: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black and green mold spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s the bathroom we use the most and it doesn't have a window, so it never fully dries out. I’ve tried a couple of store-bought sprays but it keeps coming back. For a permanent fix, is this a job I can do myself with the right products, or should I call a professional cleaning company, and what’s the typical cost for that here in Dubai?

Recurring shower mold in a Dubai bathroom, especially one without a window, is extremely common due to the high ambient humidity and constant condensation from hot showers. The grout acts like a sponge, holding moisture that mold spores thrive on.
For a small, surface-level patch, a diligent DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated hydrogen peroxide or chlorine dioxide-based cleaner (not just bleach) and scrub with a stiff brush. The critical step is to keep the area bone-dry afterwards; run the exhaust fan for at least an hour after showering and wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee. However, if the discoloration is widespread, has a musty odor, or reappears quickly after cleaning, the mold has likely penetrated deep into the grout and possibly the wall behind. In this case, scrubbing the surface is temporary. A professional assessment is recommended to determine the extent. They use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers to contain spores during remediation. The cost for professional remediation is not fixed; it depends entirely on the square footage affected and whether grout needs to be re-sealed or tiles replaced. For a standard shower enclosure, you can expect the investment to be more affordable than a full-room treatment. The key is to request a detailed assessment first—a credible provider will specify the scope of work and methods before any discussion of cost. |
