Mold in storage causing coughs: how to clean and test?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing at night for the past month and we can't figure out why. I was just getting some winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and noticed a bunch of our old suitcases and a couple of leather bags have patches of black mold on them. I’m panicking that the spores are getting into the AC. What’s the best way to clean this properly and who should I call to check the air quality for my family’s safety?

Mold growth in storage areas is extremely common in Dubai's climate, as high humidity and condensation create ideal conditions for it. The coughs you're noticing are likely a reaction to the elevated spore count, which can be distributed through your home's AC system.
For the contaminated items, non-porous materials like leather and hard-shell suitcases can often be saved. Clean them outdoors using a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrubbing gently. Porous items like fabric luggage linings are much harder to remediate and may need to be discarded to prevent ongoing spore release. The storage cupboard itself must be thoroughly cleaned with a mold-killing solution and completely dried. A dehumidifier or disposable moisture-absorbing products should be used in that space afterwards to prevent recurrence. Given the symptoms and the visible growth, a professional indoor air quality inspection is the recommended next step. This will determine if the issue is isolated to the cupboard or if spores have spread into your ductwork and living areas. Look for a provider that uses certified microbial inspectors and can provide a detailed lab report identifying the types and concentrations of mold spores in your air. This concrete data is essential, as it confirms the source of the problem and guides the necessary remediation steps to make your home safe again. |
