Mold in wardrobe: DIY clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our walk-in wardrobe in the Marina apartment has developed black spots on the back wall and a few of our leather bags have gotten a fuzzy white coating. It’s been like this since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and we run the dehumidifier constantly. Is this something we can tackle ourselves with products from Ace Hardware, or is it time to just call in a professional mold remediation company, and what would that likely cost for a small room?

Based on the description, you are dealing with a classic case of high-humidity mold growth, which is extremely common in Dubai, especially in areas like Marina with high ambient moisture. The black spots on the wall are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, and the fuzzy white growth on the leather is almost certainly a mildew, which is a type of mold.

Running a dehumidifier is the correct first step, but it's often not enough if the source of moisture is persistent or if the mold has already established a foothold. The wall cavity behind the wardrobe could be a hidden moisture reservoir, which a dehumidifier in the room can't effectively address.

For a small area, a DIY approach might be possible IF the growth is truly surface-level. You can use a hydrogen peroxide-based solution (3%) or a specialized fungicide from Ace. However, scrubbing mold can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem without proper containment. For porous materials like drywall and leather, complete removal of mold is often impossible; these items may need professional cleaning or disposal.

Given the location (a confined wardrobe affecting valuable items) and the fact it's recurring despite your efforts, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the hidden source of the humidity that's feeding the growth. Without identifying and rectifying that, it will just keep coming back.

For a small room like a wardrobe, professional remediation in the UAE typically ranges from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required repairs. This cost covers proper containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatment, and ensuring the root cause is solved.

To get a precise assessment and quote, it's best to call in a specialist. You can reach our certified team for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
