Mold in wardrobe: DIY or professional for health concerns?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom wardrobe, probably from a slow AC leak. My wife has started getting bad sinus headaches and we're worried about our toddler's health. Is this something we can handle ourselves with bleach from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what should we expect to pay for a job this size?

Given the health symptoms and the toddler in the home, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is likely just the surface growth; the underlying moisture source and potential hidden spread within the wardrobe structure are the real concerns.

Bleach is not recommended. It can irritate the airways further and only removes surface stain, not the mould roots. In Dubai’s climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for regrowth if the moisture issue isn't resolved and the area isn't treated properly.

For a wardrobe-sized remediation, expect a professional process to include containment of the area to prevent spores spreading, HEPA filtration, physical removal of contaminated materials, and antimicrobial treatment. The critical first step is a proper assessment to identify the exact moisture source—like a condensate drain leak from the AC—and the full extent of contamination. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the most definitive identification and post-remediation verification testing.

Costs are variable and depend on the extent of the work. You can expect to request an assessment and quote, which should detail the scope of remediation and testing required, rather than a standard fixed price. Given the health concerns, investing in a certified professional to ensure it's done completely is the safest course of action.
