Mold in wardrobe from AC leak: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit into the wardrobe in the master bedroom, and now I’ve just pulled out some winter clothes and found patches of fuzzy black stuff on the back wall and a few of my jackets. It smells really damp and earthy in there. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company straight away?

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square foot), a DIY approach can work. First, fix the AC leak—this is critical, or the mold will return. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the affected wall and hard surfaces with a detergent solution. For porous items like jackets, a professional dry cleaner experienced with mold is your safest bet to avoid damaging the fabric.

Given the leak and the damp, earthy smell indicating active growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended for your villa. The persistent Dubai humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to spread inside walls or the AC unit itself, far beyond what's visible. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the hidden moisture and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. This is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely and safely.
