Mold near AC vent: urgent professional needed or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a small patch of black and green mold. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm worried it's spreading inside the walls. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with bleach?

A damp smell with visible mold near an AC vent in an older Deira building warrants immediate attention. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive inside walls and ductwork, often making the visible patch just a small indicator of a larger problem.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be attempted. However, bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can actually feed mold roots hidden in porous materials. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is more effective. You must also identify and rectify the moisture source, which is likely condensation from the AC unit or a leaking condensate drain pipe.

Given the building's age and the mold's location near the vent system, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Mold spores can easily spread through the AC ducts to other rooms. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls and ducts, providing a complete assessment of the contamination. Remediation companies with their own microbiology lab, like ours, can identify the species to determine the actual health risk and verify the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing. For any recurring issue or if the area is larger than 1m², professional remediation is not just recommended but often required by building management to prevent structural damage and health concerns.
