Mold on carpet causing cough: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots that have appeared along the edges of their bedroom carpet. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse since the weather got more humid. The room is on the side of the building that doesn't get much sun. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

Your children's cough and the black spots on the carpet are likely connected, especially given the recent humidity. In Dubai's climate, carpets on shaded, cooler walls are prime spots for mold growth due to condensation from constant AC use.
For a small, surface-level area, a thorough DIY cleaning with a vinegar solution can be a first step. However, mold on carpet is often a deeper issue. The visible spots are frequently just the surface manifestation of a larger colony growing within the carpet padding and possibly the subfloor underneath. Cleaning the surface may not address the root cause or the spores already in the air. Given the health symptoms are present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to locate the source of dampness and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentrations in the room. This is crucial, as the term "black mold" is non-specific; a lab analysis determines if it's the more concerning Stachybotrys or a common, less hazardous type. Tackling it yourself risks disturbing the colony and spreading spores throughout your home, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's cough. A proper remediation would involve isolating the area, HEPA vacuuming, and often removing and disposing of the affected carpet and padding to truly resolve the problem. |
