Mold on clothes: health risks for young kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a bunch of winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. I’m really worried the spores got into the air. What are the actual health risks for my 3 and 5 year olds from this kind of exposure?

The primary risk for your children is respiratory irritation and allergic reactions, not necessarily severe illness from a single exposure. The black and green mould you found is likely releasing spores into the air, which can act as a powerful irritant. For young children, this commonly manifests as a persistent cough, congestion, wheezing, and worsened allergy symptoms, which aligns with what you're describing.

In Dubai's climate, this situation is urgent. The high humidity, especially now, allows those spores to remain viable in the air and quickly colonize other areas if not contained. The first step is to isolate the affected room and stop using the AC until it can be inspected, as the system may have circulated the spores throughout the villa. Do not attempt to clean the clothes yourself, as this will aerosolize more spores.

For a case involving young children with ongoing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent of contamination in the air and the HVAC system. They can perform air quality tests to identify the spore count and types present, which is critical information. Remediation should focus on containing the source, removing the contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Always verify that the company you hire provides documented before-and-after lab results to confirm the allergen levels have been measurably reduced.
