Mold on leather jackets: urgent professional cleaning needed?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a built-in wardrobe on the ground floor that’s against an exterior wall. I opened it yesterday to grab some winter clothes and found a bunch of them, especially my leather jackets, covered in white and black fuzzy spots. The room itself feels more humid than the rest of the house. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned like, this week, or can I handle it myself over the weekend?

That pattern of white and black fuzzy growth indicates active mold, and the elevated humidity in the room confirms a moisture source is present. For mold on porous materials like leather, the urgency depends on the extent.

For a few small spots, you can act immediately: take the jackets outside to a well-ventilated area and gently wipe the mold off with a soft cloth slightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar and water. Let them dry completely in the shade, not direct sun, which can damage the leather. However, if the mold has spread extensively, is deeply embedded, or has a strong musty odor, the leather's structure is likely compromised. In these cases, a professional restoration service specializing in mold-damaged goods is necessary to salvage them.

The more critical issue is the wardrobe itself. The humidity and exterior wall location point to condensation, a common issue in Dubai due to the high outdoor humidity meeting cooled interior walls. This mold will return unless you address the root cause. A professional inspection can identify if this is due to poor insulation, an AC issue causing uneven cooling, or another hidden moisture problem. They can also verify if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which requires remediation. To manage humidity in the short term, use a dehumidifier or desiccant bags in the wardrobe and ensure the room's AC is running consistently to reduce moisture levels.
