Mold on villa wall: DIY fix or professional remediation needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in our Mirdif villa has started to show these dark, fuzzy patches. It’s been spreading slowly since the humidity spike a couple of weeks ago, and we’re worried it’s the cause of our allergies. I’m trying to figure out if this is something I can tackle myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call in a professional team for mold remediation, and roughly how much that might cost for a wall about 3 meters wide.

Based on your description of dark, fuzzy patches spreading on a wall in Mirdif, this is a clear case of active mold growth, almost certainly exacerbated by the recent high humidity. The climate in Dubai, with its intense humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for condensation within walls, especially on cooler exterior surfaces.
Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is a superficial biocide that is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster. It may temporarily remove the visible discoloration but will not address the root moisture problem or the hyphal roots of the mold growing within the wall. This can provide a false sense of security while the problem continues to develop unseen, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the wall and leading to worse air quality issues. For a 3-meter wall with spreading, visible growth, professional remediation is not just recommended; it is necessary. A certified team will first conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the exact moisture source (e.g., a condensation issue from AC ducts, a minor leak, or capillary rise) and the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing and disposing of affected porous materials safely, HEPA vacuuming, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions. The cost for a project of this scale can vary but typically starts from AED 1,500 upwards, depending on the penetration depth and required repairs. For a proper assessment and to safeguard your family's health, I recommend you contact our team for a professional inspection.
