Mold on winter clothes: DIY or professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa to find a few jackets with black fuzzy spots on them. The room has felt damp for a while, but I only now connected the dots. Is this a job for a dehumidifier and some bleach, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company right away?

Visible mold on clothing, especially with the dampness you've noticed and respiratory symptoms in the household, strongly suggests a larger underlying moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from AC units, high ambient humidity, or a concealed water leak.

For the jackets, do not use bleach. It can damage fabrics and doesn't address the root problem. You can attempt to wash the items with hot water and a mold-inhibiting detergent, but if the mold has deeply penetrated the material, they may be unsalvageable.

A dehumidifier is a good reactive step for the room's dampness but is a temporary solution. The critical action is to find and eliminate the moisture source. This could be a leaking pipe in the wall, insufficient ventilation, or an AC drain pan overflow—all common in UAE villas.

Given the described conditions and health symptoms, a professional inspection is highly recommended. What you see on the clothes is likely just the visible tip of the iceberg; mold often grows extensively within wall cavities or behind stored items. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source and assess the full extent of the contamination without guesswork. They can then advise if remediation is a contained DIY project or requires professional containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home during cleanup.
