Mold removal cost for small area and DIY safe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might be spreading. I’m worried about my family’s health but also don't want to get ripped off. What’s a realistic price range for professional mold removal for a small area like this, and is it a job I can safely tackle myself with products from Ace Hardware?

For a small, contained patch like that, DIY is possible but carries risks. The visible mold is often just the surface growth; the root system can penetrate deep into drywall or plaster. Bleach-based cleaners from Ace only bleach the surface and don't address the moisture source, so regrowth is common here due to our high humidity.

A professional assessment is recommended to identify the moisture source—it could be a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or humidity from the recent weather. They use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial solutions to treat the area and the air, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of the house. For a small area, you're typically looking at the cost of a site visit and assessment plus the remediation work, which is generally a few hundred dirhams for a basic job, but this can vary based on the extent of the problem found.

If you attempt DIY, isolate the area with plastic sheeting, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and use a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution instead of bleach. But if the mold returns, which it often does in Dubai's climate without addressing the root cause, you'll need a professional to prevent it from becoming a larger issue.
