Mold smell after flood: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our ground floor apartment in Jumeirah flooded during the storm and we thought we cleaned it all up, but a week later I’m noticing a really strong, damp mold smell coming from the bottom of the built-in wardrobe. The carpet around it still feels a bit damp to the touch. Should I try to pull up the carpet and treat this myself with a dehumidifier, or is this the point where I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning service to prevent it from getting worse?

Good morning. That damp, musty smell you're describing is a major red flag, and you're right to be concerned. As a specialist in Dubai's indoor environmental quality, I see this frequently after flood events, especially in ground-floor units where water can be trapped in sub-flooring and behind built-ins.

What you're smelling are Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs), metabolic byproducts released by actively growing mold colonies. The fact that the carpet is still damp a week later indicates significant moisture retention. In our high-humidity climate, this creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, often within the carpet underlay, the wall cavity behind the wardrobe, or the concrete slab itself, which can wick and hold moisture for weeks.

DIY efforts like a consumer-grade dehumidifier are unlikely to suffice. The water has likely migrated to inaccessible areas. Pulling up the carpet yourself can be hazardous, as it risks releasing a large concentration of mold spores into your living environment, potentially causing health issues and spreading the contamination.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, persistent dampness and suspected mold growth post-flooding warrant a professional assessment. We use specialized tools like thermal imaging cameras to map moisture and borescopes to see inside walls, which is crucial for a proper remediation plan.

My strong recommendation is to call a professional service immediately to prevent structural damage and potential health risks. We are equipped with industrial-grade drying systems (LGR dehumidifiers, air scrubbers) and antimicrobial treatments approved for use here.
